AUSTIN, Texas – The halls of James Bowie High School are quieter this week as the community grapples with the sudden loss of a pillar of its faculty, John Morrow.
Morrow, a devoted teacher and mentor whose career spanned decades at the South Austin school, passed away recently, leaving a void felt by generations of students and colleagues.
School administrators sent a note to Bowie High families Monday morning, calling the loss “profound” and highlighting Morrow’s unwavering dedication.
“John wasn’t just teaching subject matter; he was teaching students how to believe in themselves,” said Dr. Elena Ruiz, the school’s principal, in an interview with us “His classroom was a safe haven for so many. He had a rare gift for connecting with every kind of student—the star athlete, the quiet artist, the struggling freshman. He saw the potential in everyone.”
That sentiment is echoed by former students now flooding social media with tributes. #MrMorrowBowie is trending locally on X, with hundreds sharing stories of his encouragement.
“He was the reason I passed AP Calculus and the reason I had the confidence to apply to engineering school,” wrote alum Marcus Chen, Class of 2018. “I showed up to his class terrified of numbers. He told me, ‘We’re not just solving for X, we’re solving for your future.’ I’ll carry that with me forever.”
Beyond his engaging teaching style, Morrow was known for his deep kindness. Colleagues say he was often the first to check in on a struggling coworker and the last to leave after tutoring sessions.
Fellow teacher and close friend Sarah Wilkinson fought back tears describing him. “John had this quiet, steadfast presence. He didn’t just listen; he heard you. For kids going through tough times at home or just the chaos of being a teenager, that meant everything. He was a lifeline.”
Counselors from across the Austin Independent School District have been made available at Bowie High this week for students and staff needing support.
Morrow is survived by his loving family. Details on a public memorial service are expected to be shared by the family in the coming days, with school officials planning a separate gathering on campus to celebrate his life and legacy.
HOW TO HELP: The James Bowie High School PTA has established a memorial fund in John Morrow’s name, with proceeds directed toward a scholarship for future educators. Donations can be made through the Bowie High School website.
This is a developing story. FOX19 Now will update with information on memorial services as it is released.
